One of my favorite spaces in the world, this low lit tea room is the epitome of Japanese refinement. Spotlights shine down on a collection of delicate bonsai trees, switched out weekly by the resident bonsai artist. Far more than a gardening hobby, the practice of tending to bonsais is an art of patience, virtue, and a representation of the Japanese respect for living things.

Waiters and waitresses wear traditional garments as they serve you genmaicha biscuits, mont blanc “snow,” traditional wagashi, and plenty of fine teas sourced from across the country. Here I first met my friend Yutaro, who showed me the gallery’s secret mediation room and minimalist tea ceremony space. A must-visit when in Tokyo!

"The Japanese art of bonsai care is symbolic of the culture's appreciation for the beauty and harmony found within the natural world."
