SGS Island Guide: Naxos, Greece

The Greek islands are full of magic- in fact, each has its own grand history of ancient myths, gods, and goddesses!

I visited Naxos with my sister after seeing it on Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. It was just as lovely as on the show, and the food was a true standout.

Here are my must-dos on a visit to Naxos!

Have a meal at To Elliniko

Some of the best food we had in Greece, To Elliniko specializes in lamb kleftiko, a slow-cooked lamb dish with plenty of garlic, olive oil, and herbs. Alongside the lamb, make sure to try the saganaki with tomato marmalade- a truly divine experience.

Indulge in saganaki

Shop around at Turokomia Naxou Koufopoulos

A shop filled with local cheeses, spices, herbs, and olive oils, this place is a must-stop for the gourmand. The perfect way to take a bit of Greece home with you!

Try not to buy everything…

Drink a Freddo cappuccino at Avaton 1739

A former monastery-turned-restaurant, Avaton 1739 has stunning views of the sea and other islands in the distance. It’s the ideal place to have an afternoon treat of cherry spoon sweets with Greek yogurt and tsoureki with peanut butter and local honey.

What a view!

Shop at Erato Art Gallery

Giving the vibe of modern Greece, Erato makes gorgeous handmade jewelry, delicately presented in its stone showroom.

A little present to yourself.

Watch the sunset at the Temple of Apollo

Half the island will be here to see the same thing- but it’s worth it for the views of the sky through the ruins of this once flourishing temple. If you prefer a less crowded vibe, come here early for the sunrise instead.

Just unreal.

Spend the day at Plaka Beach

The most beautiful beach we saw in Greece, Plaka will truly take your breath away. This place is precisely what you’d imagine when you think of Greece- azul blue waters, golden sand, and island mountains in the horizon- a view fit for the gods. Be aware that it is a nude beach, but you can wear whatever you like.

An unforgettable beach.

Eat everything at Meltemi Restaurant

A spot filled with locals, the food at this restaurant is just unbelievably good. The staff welcomes you like family, feeding you the best of Greek cuisine. Don’t leave without trying their lemony oregano potatoes (I crave them just writing this) and their tzatziki and grilled pita bread.

I’m thinking of these potatoes again…
