I indulged in my Mexico City tradition each Sunday, starting the day with a visit to two nearby markets, Mercado El 100 and Huerto Roma Verde.
Mercado El 100 has some of the best produce in the city, carefully selected from small farms surrounding Mexico City. This market is my favorite in CDMX for seasonal produce- the offerings are always changing!
The tropical fruits in Mexico are some of my favorites, especially star fruits (“Carambola” en español). Mercado El 100 has some of the best. You can tell a carambola is ripe when it is a rich yellow color with browning at the edges. Do not eat green carambolas as they are unripe and very sour!
I took my fruits home and made myself this smoothie bowl, perfect for a day under the Mexican sun.
Pina Colada Smoothie Bowl
- 1 cup / 165 grams chopped pineapple, frozen
- ⅓ cup crema de coco
- ½ ripe maracuyá
- ½ ripe carambola
Blend the pineapple and crema de coco until smooth, with an ice cream-like consistency. You can add more crema de coco if needed. Decorate with sliced maracuyá and carambola. If you can find them at Mercado El 100, edible flowers also make great toppings!
P.S. This recipe will also be featured in a future creative project… coming soon!
